Hello everyone, today we bring you "If Love Has a Will", a beautiful Korean love film released in 2003, which is a fairy tale for adults. In this film, the director uses a unique narrative technique, using a complex crossover narrative structure to transform the love story of two generations at will as they proceed until they merge.

At the beginning of the film, when Zixi, a college student, is cleaning her room, she inadvertently finds a mysterious box full of love letters left by her mother, Song Joo-hee, and Oh Jun-ha. Although the two eventually marry and have children, their children grow up to renew their relationship for their parents and eventually come together. 1968 Joo-hee, an innocent and lovely young woman, falls in love with poor student Jun-ha at first sight, but due to Joo-hee's illustrious family background, the two fall in love with each other in a painful tangle of clichéd mismatch. As Song Joo-hee's dusty story is uncovered, Zixi's love for Sang-min is also getting on track step by step.

The two fell in love at first sight when they met Oh Jun Ha by chance in the countryside. The two of them fall in love at first sight. Joo-hee takes the initiative to ask Jun-ha to see a haunted house, and when he fails to return by boat, Jun-ha takes Joo-hee to a small stream. At night, the sky is full of fireflies, and Joon-ha catches a firefly and hands it to Joo-hee. After confirming their feelings for each other, Sang-min also caught a firefly and gave it to Joo-hee just like his father, Oh Jun-ha, did at first. Although the time they spent together was short, Joo-hee and Jun-ha had a deep bond. When Joo-hee left the countryside, she gave the necklace around her neck to Jun-ha as a souvenir. This was the first appearance of the necklace, which witnessed the beginning of their relationship.

At the end of summer vacation, Jun Ha goes back to the city to study, but his best buddy Tae Soo asks himself to write a letter to the girl he likes, and coincidentally, the person Tae Soo wants to write a love letter to is Joo Hee. Jun Ha meets Joo-hee again with Tae-soo's introduction. With Jun Ha's streetlight confession, the two finally get together.

Meanwhile, in 2003, Joo-hee's love is equally difficult. She has a crush on Sang-min of the drama society, but she is caught in the conflict between love and friendship and helps her best friend Soo-kyung to write a love letter to Sang-min. Both are writing love letters for their best friend to the person they like, and in this respect, the feelings of the two generations are echoed at the beginning.

As Joo-hee and Jun-ha's relationship deepens, Joo-hee is in pain and eventually Jun-ha tells Tae-soo about his feelings for Joo-hee. Knowing the truth, Tae-soo tells Joon-ha that the necklace was given to Joo-hee by Tae-soo's father and asks Joon-ha not to show it to Tae-soo's father around his neck.

During the school holidays, Joon-ha exchanged letters with Joo-hee under Tae-soo's name. But eventually a letter was returned to Tae-soo's house, and after reading the letter, Tae-soo's father beat Tae-soo severely. Tae-soo chose to hang himself in order to become Joo-hee Jun-ha. Tae-soo was found and sent to the hospital. Joo-hee went to the hospital to see Tae-soo, but Jun-ha wanted to withdraw from the relationship. While Joo-hee was talking to Tae-soo, Joo-hee suddenly found that the necklace she gave to Jun-ha was hung on the handrail of the room door. Joo-hee chased after him out of the hospital but couldn't find Jun-ha. The appearance of the necklace symbolizes the short breakup of Joo-hee and Joon-ha.

When Joon-ha is going to war as a soldier, Joo-hee and Tae-soo go to see Joon-ha off. When Joo-hee managed to find Jun-ha in the carriage, Joo-hee desperately knocked on the window and told Jun-ha to come back alive. Junha kept turning his back and not looking at Joo-hee, but the moment the train opened, Joo-hee ran after the train and Junha couldn't hold back any longer and ran to the door of the carriage and caught the necklace that Joo-hee handed out. Finally, Joon-ha took Joo-hee's necklace to the battlefield. The appearance of the necklace symbolizes the relationship between Joo-hee and Jun-ha, and the necklace accompanies Jun-ha instead of Joo-hee.

Junha fought bravely to kill the enemy again, but finally lost to the enemy and retreated. When retreating, Junha found that the necklace around his neck was missing. Jun Ha returns to the same place to look for the necklace and finds it and brings back a teammate. However, it was attacked by a bomb. This time the necklace appeared and put Joon-ha in a life-threatening situation and lost his eyesight.

Years later, Joon-ha and Joo-hee meet at a restaurant. Jun Ha lies to Joo Hee that he is married, and although he hides it well, the accident still makes Joo Hee discover that he has lost his sight. The two of them said goodbye to each other with tears in their eyes, and the necklace was the end of their long-standing relationship and a sign of a new beginning. In the end, Joo-hee married Tae-soo with tears in her eyes and gave birth to a daughter, Zixi, while Jun-ha married and gave birth to Sang-min. Eventually, Jun Ha passed away. When Zixi told the story of her mother and her first love to Sangmin, she found that Sangmin's eyes had long been red and swollen and removed the necklace from her neck. The appearance of the necklace allows Zixi and Sangmin to recognize each other, signaling a new life, and their love for each other renews the previous relationship for their parents.

There is nothing unique about the film in terms of content, but if we analyze the narrative technique of the film, we have to be impressed by the boldness and ingenuity of director Guo Zailong. By using a necklace to run through the love line between two generations, the two threads no longer cross each other, but are linked in cause and effect to form a complete narrative, which makes the story clear even though it is closely connected. At the same time, the film is able to combine the dimensions of time and space, with Junha, who is lying in front of the window thinking about Joo-hee, cutting to Zixi, who is lying on the table, and Zixi, who is reading her mother's diary in the library, cutting to Junha, who is writing a love letter for Tae-soo in the classroom. At the beginning of the film, Zixi suddenly sees a rainbow in front of the window, and at the end of the film, Junha's passing, the main character is remembering herself as a child and the rainbow her mother saw. The film is precisely through the crossover use of interpolation, flashback and pre-narrative, which dilutes the concept of time and allows the two stories to develop between two generations.

If love had a destiny, people who love each other would meet. But love has its own providence, and there will definitely be someone you love who will find you through all the hardships and obstacles in the world and decide to find you! Believe in love, believe in you.
